Dyson V12 vs V11: Ultimate Side-by-side Comparison

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Continuing on my Dyson cordless stick vacuums series, I will compare the latest Dyson V12 vs V11. Having used both, I can say that the Dyson V12 is superior to the Dyson V11 in most respects.

The Dyson V12‘s soft roller head makes it more effective on bare floors, it has the same battery life as the V11 but charges more quickly, and its lightweight design makes it easier to maneuver. If you have allergies and are curious about the level of tiny particles in your home, the Piezo sensor may be useful.  You can’t go wrong with this vacuum if you need to clean hardwood or other hard-surface floors or if you have pets at home.

However, as a runner-up, the Dyson V11 has higher suction power making it a better choice for cleaning low-pile carpeting. It also has a larger dustbin that won’t need to be emptied as frequently. For thorough carpet cleaning, this model should be considered.

Dyson V12 vs V11: Differences

The Dyson V12 beats the V11 by a score of 2-1 and 1 tie. The V12 delivers superior performance on bare floors, charges more quickly while maintaining comparable battery life, and has a lighter design. But its dust cup isn’t very big, so it may need to be emptied more than once while cleaning.

Cleaning Performance

The Winner: Tie

Motor Power

The V11 and V12 are powered by the same Dyson Hyperdymium motor, which can reach speeds of up to 125,000 RPM. In comparison, this has a power that is far greater than that of the earlier Dyson models (Dyson V8 and other older models only reached a maximum of 110,000 RPM). This number has led me to believe that these two vacuum cleaners will have better performance. That’s true!

The Dyson V11 has a suction power of 185 AW, making it a little stronger than the Dyson V12, which only has a suction power of 150 AW.

But the motor power of a Dyson vacuum, or any other vacuum, for that matter, is only one piece of the puzzle. In addition to this, you need to think about how well it cleans in actual use. So, to see how well these vacuums cleaned, I did a series of tests with four different types of dirt and three different types of flooring. (Hardwoods, Low-pile carpet, and High-pile carpet)

Cleaning Performance

  • Dyson V11

The Dyson V11 performed exceptionally well over all types of floors, including those with which the Dyson V12 had some difficulty. I tested it both with and without the soft roller heading and regardless of which way I used it, I got the same excellent outcomes.

Although the Torque Drive cleaning head has a tendency to scatter lighter dirt across the floor before sucking it up, this is not an especially serious problem. Despite this, it was still able to remove all of the debris, including the smaller particles such as rice and fine sugar particles.

  • Dyson V12

The Dyson V12 is strong enough to get rid of most types of debris, from big particles like cereal to tiny particles like sugar and kitty litter. In my tests, it functioned admirably on all three surface types.

In comparison to the V11 which has 185 AW motor power, this model only offers 150 AW of suction power, which is a significant decrease. Perhaps that’s why it struggled to pick up dirt from high-pile carpets as the V11 Torque Drive did. For other types of debris and flooring, however, there was essentially no distinction between the two. Thanks to its laser narrow roller nozzle, it has outstanding agitation, particularly on hard surfaces; in fact, it is even better than the Dyson V11 in this regard.

Cleaning Heads

The High Torque and the Motorbar cleaning heads each are equipped with a spiral bristle brush roll that also contains rubber components. The former makes use of a technique known as Dynamic Load Sense (DLS), whilst the Motorbar head features 43 detangling vanes

Despite having only one cleaning head, the V11 is versatile enough to be used on a wide variety of surfaces. Because it has this cleaner head, I find that it performs on carpets much more effectively than the Dyson V12 does.

In addition, the Dyson V12 comes equipped with the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head, which enables the vacuum to recognize even the tiniest dust particles in all lighting conditions. When the brush roll gets dirty, just take it out and wash it in some warm water. Before you use it again, allow it to air dry for about twenty-four hours.

The Dyson V12 was also quite effective at eliminating pet hair from rugs as well as other types of surfaces. This model comes with an anti-tangle brush that can remove long hair and even pet hair in seconds.

Dustbin Capacity

The Winner: Dyson V11

Dyson V11's dustbin
Dyson V11’s dustbin

The Dyson V11 has a dustbin that is twice as large as the one included in the Dyson V12 model. The dustbin on the Dyson V11 is capable of holding up to 0.75 liters of debris, while the one on the Dyson V12 can hold only 0.38 liters. Because of its smaller capacity, the latter requires more frequent emptying than the former does.

Design & Convenience

The Winner: Dyson V12

At first glance, the Dyson V11 and V12 look rather comparable to one another; nevertheless, there are a few key distinctions between the two models. In the next section, I will explain the significance of these factors from the perspective of the average buyer.

Weight & Maneuverability

The V12 and the V11 are simple and straightforward to maneuver. The Dyson V12, on the other hand, is more portable and less in weight. (5.2 lbs vs. 6.7 lbs). Therefore, I find that moving around while holding the Dyson V12 in my hand is a little bit more comfortable. In addition, it is possible to use both of them as handheld devices, which makes it a lot easier to carry either from one location to another.

Also, take into consideration the size of the dustbin. The Dyson V11 can hold a lot more dirt than the V12, thus it is also bigger. These are all reasons why I don’t think the V12 is the best choice for cleaning larger houses as opposed to smaller apartments or studios.

Battery Life

Both vacuums have a run time of up to 60 minutes on a single charge, which ought to be sufficient for me to clean my typical apartment entirely.

Although both models have a run time of 60 minutes, this number will vary depending on how you use them. Depending on which mode you choose, the battery life will either get longer or get shorter. When compared to the Dyson V12, the V11 has a longer run time despite the fact that it has a higher power needed for operation.

Auto47:42 mins33:28 mins

Charge Time

The charging time for the V11 is approximately 4.5 hours, whilst the V12 should be completely charged in less than 4 hours

Also, both the Dyson V11 and the Dyson V12 come with a click-in battery. This battery may be quickly and simply removed with this click-in design. Therefore, in the event that you require an additional run time, you have the option of purchasing a spare one, which would provide you with an additional run time of 60 minutes. In this way, battery life is no longer an impediment to making the conversion from corded to cordless devices, even if having a large home.

On the back of each vacuum, there is an LED screen that displays the remaining amount run time.

On/Off Control

With the V11, your finger must hold the trigger at all times. This feature might seem annoying, but it actually helps you save battery power and get a longer run time. As soon as you remove your finger from the trigger of the vacuum, it will automatically stop working. But for me, that really bothered me to no end. Because I have to keep pressure on that trigger all the time, my wrists start to hurt after a while.

In comparison to the Dyson V11, I found that the V12 was a great deal less annoying. It has a standard on/off button that is positioned atop the dustbin and can be accessed at any time. Customers of Dyson have been asking for this particular feature for years! It is finally here!

As a result of this, it is extremely unlikely that the user will accidentally activate the device, which is something that may occur with the V11. It is also gentler on the fingers, so you will be able to clean your house for longer without getting worn.

Utilities

The Winner: Dyson V12

Digital Display

Although they both feature useful LCD displays, the information that is shown is not exactly the same.

the dyson v12's lcd screen
The Dyson V12’s LCD screen

On the Dyson V12, you are able to get access to or make changes to the following:

  • Cleaning mode
  • Battery life
  • Suction power
  • Particle size and type
  • Maintenance reminders

On the other hand, the Dyson V11 will present the following information on its screen:

  • Cleaning mode
  • Battery life
  • Blockage reports
  • Filter maintenance alerts

Both versions also feature a control button beneath the display for making adjustments and viewing useful information like battery life.

Piezo Sensor

The V12 features a piezo sensor that is capable of determining the size as well as dust particle types. It then makes the necessary adjustments to the power level and the amount of suction based on this information. I really appreciate this feature.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available on the Dyson V11 vacuum.
